Citation: On board the U.S.S. Colorado in action against a Korean fort on 11 June 1871. Assisted in capturing the Korean standard in the center of the citadel of the fort.
Engaged in hand-to-hand combat resulting in many wounded Americans, Marine Cpl. Charles Brown and PVT Hugh Purvis tore down the enemy’s flag within the heavily defended "citadel". The flag that was taken down was called a Sujagi and represented where a commanding general was located. The flag was put into the collection of the United States Navel Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. In 2007 it was loaned to Korea to be returned at a later time.
